GM trucks use Allison transmissions, you know, just like the ones in Abrams tanks.

Not. Really. (If wikipedia is to be believed, 26m was allocated for 48 tank transmissions in the '13 defense budget.)

Then Ford comes out with this stupid *military grade aluminum(otherwise know as 6000 series aluminum, the kind most of us use to fabricate with every day).

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Now I see that GMC's new truck is using ROLL FORMED STEEL LIKE SUBMARINES USE!!!!

Or like I use for my sculptures.

I'm gonna start telling everyone that Brown Dog Welding ONLY welds with the same noble gas found in OUTER SPACE......Argon!!! If it's good enough for aliens, it's good enough for me.

This was the best post I;ve read today. I work in marketing and I know spin when I see it, especially since I have lots of engineer friends. Sidenote: I hate the terms: space age, Aircraft grade, military grade and others like it.

As someone who has worked in the auto industry, the defense industry, and has more than a basic knowledge of metallurgy and engineering, perhaps I'm hyper-sensitive. It's borderline insulting to one's intelligence.

Wait a minute. If argon is in outer space, doesn't that mean it sucks?

Is that welding mask using TINTED GLASS, the same TINTED GLASS the SPACE SHUTTLE USES*

*if the space shuttle were outfitted with tinted glass for a mission to the sun or something

It means it's what aliens breathe. Which means it's freaking bad ass. And I WELD WITH IT.

EXACTLY

(if you're seriously asking the sub hulls are cold rolled. This is pretty quick and easy read: http://www.submarineresearch.com/bull31.html )

It's all fun and games until you're trying to sell cars with an aluminum frame and a customers says "Is that safe? Isn't aluminum soft? I can dent an aluminum can much easier than a tin can.. whats a tin can made out of?" True damn story. From that day forward I started saying "aircraft grade aluminum" just like the manufacturer wanted us to, and all problems went away.
